Determination of Trace Metals Abnormalities in Patients with Vivax Malaria
Background: In the present study, blood serum level of metals were determined in malarial patients and compared with those in the normal subjects without complication using Atomic Absorption Spectrometer.Methods: For the determination of these metals twelve intravenous blood samples each from referred malarial patients and a group of normal subjects were collected and immediately centrifuged to obtain the supernatant liquid, serum of both the groups for analysis.Results: The blood serum levels of copper in malarial patients determined to be 2.6917 ppm, which is higher as compared to that found 2.045 in normal subjects. Whereas the blood serum levels of iron, magnesium, and zinc found 2.0708 ppm, 12.2467 ppm and 4.9017 ppm respectively in malarial patients, who are lower than those, are determined in the blood serum of normal subjects. Blood serum levels of iron, magnesium, and zinc in normal subjects found 3.950 ppm, 19.4892 ppm, and 5.242 ppm respectively.Conclusion: In this study the metal content of copper, iron, magnesium and zinc in vary in malarial patients as compared those in the normal subjects. It may suggest that the decreased levels of iron, magnesium, and zinc can be maintained by giving as supplement of these metals in therapy
Wind Energy Potential at Badin and Pasni Costal Line of Pakistan
Unfortunately, Pakistan is facing an acute energy crisis since the past decade due to the increasing population growth and is heavily dependent on imports of fossil fuels. The shortage of the electricity is 14-18 hours in rural areas and 8-10 hours in urban areas. This situation has been significantly affecting the residential, industrial and commercial sectors in the country. At this time, it is immense challenges for the government to keep the power supply provision continue in the future for the country. In this situation, it has been the increased research to explore renewable energy resources in the country to fulfill the deficit scenario in the state. The renewable energy sector has not penetrated in the energy mix, currently in the upcoming markets. This paper highlights the steps taken by the country in the past and is taking steps at the present time to get rid of from the existing energy crisis when most urban areas are suffering from power outages for 12 hours on regular basis. Until 2009, no single grid interconnected wind established, but now the circumstances are changing significantly and wind farms are contributing to the national grid is the reality now. The initiation of the three wind farms interconnection network and many others in the pipeline are going to be operational soon. The federal policy on wind energy system has recently changed. Surprisingly, the continuing schemes of the wind farm are getting slow. Automatic Detection of Anatomical Features on 3D Ear Impressions for Canonical Representation.
We propose a shape descriptor for 3D ear impressions, dederived from a comprehensive set of anatomical features. Motivated by hearing aid (HA) manufacturing, the selection of the anatomical features is carried out according to their uniqueness and importance in HA design. This leads to a canonical ear signature that is highly distinctive and potentially well suited for classification. First, the anatomical features are characterized into generic topological and geometric features, namely concavities, elbows, ridges, peaks, and bumps on the surface of the ear. Fast and robust algorithms are then developed for their detection. This indirect approach ensures the generality of the algorithms with potential applications in biomedicine, biometrics, and reverse engineering
Temporal trends in results of 9170 myocardial perfusion imaging studies (2004 to 2013)
BACKGROUND: To assess the frequency of normal and abnormal myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in a consecutive cohort of patients from Pakistan over a period of 8.5 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We assessed 9170 patients who had undergone stress-rest MPI between January 2004 and June 2013. Patients were assessed for change in demographics, risk factors, and frequency of abnormal and normal MPI. RESULTS: Overall mean age and male predominance of studied cohort was ≈ 55 years and ≈ 55:45 (M:F), respectively, with no appreciable decline or rise. Marked decline in exercise as mode of stress (from 71% to 35%, p value significant) was noted during the study period. Regarding the risk factors for CAD, only hypertension was noted to have a significant rising trend during the study period. Trend of MPI results over study period was found non-significant from 2004 till 2006 but from 2007 onward (except 2008), a marginal but significant decline in abnormal MPIs (from 45% to 42%; significant p value) and rise in normal MPI (from 55% to 58%; significant p value) was noted. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that over the past 8.5 years, a marginal but significant decline in abnormal and a rise in normal MPIs trend have been observed. An exorbitant rise in use of vasodilator as a method of stress was also observed. We envisaged a follow-up study to ascertain lower negative predictive value of vasodilator as a possible reason and till than results of this and other such studies must be read cautiously

Automated quantification of non-calcified coronary plaques in cardiac CT angiographic imagery
The high mortality rate associated with coronary heart disease (CHD) has driven intensive research in cardiac image analysis. The advent of computed tomography angiography (CTA) has turned non-invasive diagnosis of cardiovascular anomalies into reality as calcified coronary plaques can be easily identified due to high intensity values. However, detection and quantification of the non-calcified plaques in CTA is still a challenging problem because of their lower intensity values, which are often similar to the nearby blood and muscle tissues. In this work, we propose Bayesian posterior based model for precise quantification of the non-calcified plaques in CTA imagery. The only indicator of non-calcified plaques in CTA is relatively lower intensity. Hence, we exploited intensity variations to discriminate voxels into lumen and plaque classes. Based on the normal coronary segments, we computed the vessel-wall thickness in first step. In the subsequent step, we removed vessel wall from the segmented tree and employed Gaussian Mixture Model to compute optimal distribution parameters. In the final step, distribution parameters were employed in Bayesian posterior model to classify voxels into lumen or plaque. A total of 18 CTA volumes were analyzed in this work using two different approaches. According to the experimental results, mean Jaccard overlap is around 88% with respect to the manual expert. In terms of sensitivity, specificity and accuracy, the proposed method achieves 84.13%, 79.15% and 82.02% success, respectively. Conclusion: According to the experimental results, it is shown that the proposed plaque quantification method achieves accuracy equivalent to human experts
Microwave Hydrothermal Carbonization of Rice Straw: Optimization of Process Parameters and Upgrading of Chemical, Fuel, Structural and Thermal Properties.
The process parameters of microwave-induced hydrothermal carbonization (MIHTC) play an important role on the hydrothermal chars (hydrochar) yield. The effect of reaction temperature, reaction time, particle size and biomass to water ratio was optimized for hydrochar yield by modeling using the central composite design (CCD). Further, the rice straw and hydrochar at optimum conditions have been characterized for energy, chemical, structural and thermal properties. The optimum condition for hydrochar synthesis was found to be at a 180 °C reaction temperature, a 20 min reaction time, a 1:15 weight per volume (w/v) biomass to water ratio and a 3 mm particle size, yielding 57.9% of hydrochar. The higher heating value (HHV), carbon content and fixed carbon values increased from 12.3 MJ/kg, 37.19% and 14.37% for rice straw to 17.6 MJ/kg, 48.8% and 35.4% for hydrochar. The porosity, crystallinity and thermal stability of the hydrochar were improved remarkably compared to rice straw after MIHTC. Two characteristic peaks from XRD were observed at 2? of 15° and 26°, whereas DTG peaks were observed at 50?150 °C and 300?350 °C for both the materials. Based on the results, it can be suggested that the hydrochar could be potentially used for adsorption, carbon sequestration, energy and agriculture applications
Financial crisis of 2008 and outward foreign investments from China and India
Based on a cross-industry panel of 510 non-financial Indian and Chinese firms during the period 2005-2015, we argue and show that Chinese firms with resource and asset seeking motives and Indian firms with market-seeking motives suffered differently from the financial crisis of 2008. Specifically, Indian firms that faced financial market imperfections domestically and market contraction externally had to cut back on outward investments as markets shrank and sales growth dampened. In contrast, the fortunes of Chinese firms that relied on debt finance to seek out international assets rose. Not only had investment targets become cheaper after the financial crisis, but the reliance on leverage as the instrument of finance also inured Chinese firms to the fluctuations of stock markets and the other financial implications of the crisis. Consequently, Chinese and Indian outward investment paths that looked so similar before 2008 began to diverge rapidly
